How long does cashback take? The real payout timeline

Cashback has two clocks, and mixing them up is why people think they got robbed. The first is the wait for cashback to go from "pending" to confirmed, usually 3 to 14 weeks; the second is the separate wait to withdraw it once it's confirmed, anywhere from the next business day to a full quarter depending on the portal. Here's how both work, portal by portal.

Clock one: pending → confirmed (the long one)

This is the wait that surprises people. After you buy, your cashback sits as "pending" while the store's own return window runs: the portal doesn't get paid until it's clear you're not sending the item back, and it can't pay you until it's been paid itself. Rakuten's own help center is the most specific about it: 3 to 14 weeks to confirm a typical online or in-store purchase. BeFrugal publishes a similar window, 15 to 60 days. Budget for the long end of that range and you won't be caught out.

Travel is slower everywhere. Rakuten confirms travel cashback in 6 to 17 weeks after your trip ends (Expedia bookings are the exception, confirmed within a week), and BeFrugal can take up to 90 days after your reservation completes.

This wait is normal, and it's not the portal stalling: it's the same return window running in the background on every purchase. If your click-through shows up in your account's trip history, the system saw you; you're just in the queue.

Clock two: confirmed → withdrawn (the fast one, usually)

Once cashback is confirmed, how fast you actually get it depends entirely on the portal. Here's how three of the 42 portals we track handle it:

• TopCashback. No minimum to cash out via PayPal, Venmo, or ACH. TopCashback's own help center says PayPal payments typically take 1 to 2 business days to arrive.
• BeFrugal. Most payouts go out the next business day after you request them; check payouts need $25, but PayPal/Venmo/Zelle/direct deposit start at a cent.
• Rakuten. Pays on a quarterly schedule (Feb 15, May 15, Aug 15, Nov 15). Rakuten's own terms say you need $5.01 confirmed before a payment date to be included in it; a smaller balance waits for a later payment.

So two people with the "same" cashback can get paid weeks apart, purely based on which portal they used.

What this means for you

• Don't file a missing-cashback claim too early. BeFrugal and TopCashback both publish the same first checkpoint: give a purchase a full 7 days to even show as pending before you worry, then let the confirmation window above run its course before assuming anything's lost.
